Therapy for High-Functioning Anxiety & Perfectionism

For the woman who looks like she has it all figured out, and is exhausted from keeping up the act.

You're successful. You're organized. You get things done, and done well.
From the outside, nobody would guess how loud it actually is in your head.

What High-Functioning Anxiety Actually Looks Like

High-functioning anxiety doesn't look like falling apart. It looks like showing up early, over-preparing for everything, and still feeling like you're one mistake away from it all unraveling. It can look like:

  • Redoing something three times because it's still not quite right

  • Saying yes to avoid the discomfort of someone being disappointed in you

  • Feeling anxious even when nothing is technically wrong

  • Struggling to enjoy an accomplishment before your brain moves on to the next thing you need to fix

  • Being told you're "so put together" while feeling anything but, on the inside

None of this makes you high-maintenance or dramatic. It makes you someone who learned, at some point, that being exceptional was the safest way to be okay.

Why Your Life Can Look Good and Still Feel Like This

This is one of the most confusing parts for the women I work with. You don't have an obvious reason to feel this anxious. Your job is going fine. Your relationships are fine. And you still feel like you're bracing for something.

Perfectionism and high-functioning anxiety usually aren't really about the task in front of you. They're about what you learned, a long time ago, about what happens if you're not exceptional, not helpful, not on top of everything. Sometimes that's connected to earlier experiences you'd never think to call trauma. Sometimes it's just years of being praised for achievement and quietly learning your worth was tied to it. Either way, your life looking "fine" on paper doesn't mean what's happening underneath isn't real.

Signs This Might Be More Than "Just Being Driven"

You might relate to this if you:

  • Can't relax, even when there's technically nothing to do

  • Tie your worth to your productivity or performance

  • Struggle to accept help or delegate, because it feels safer to just do it yourself

  • Say yes automatically, then resent it later

  • Feel anxious about being "found out" as not as capable as people think you are

  • Look completely fine to everyone around you, and know that's not the whole story

How Therapy Helps

We'll work on understanding where this pattern started and loosening its grip, not just managing the anxiety day to day, but actually changing your relationship to achievement, rest, and your own worth.

Depending on what you need, that might mean EMDR if you already understand why you push yourself this hard but can't seem to stop, or Talk Therapy if you're still piecing together where this started and want practical tools alongside that understanding. A lot of clients end up doing some combination of both.
